Is it common/helpful to have a separate email list for wholesale accounts?

I send emails to my retail customers, but have recently been asked by my stockists to send them emails regarding new products, announcements, etc. I don't know why I never thought of doing this! Is this a thing? Is there an easy way to go about it?

Absolutely. Different stream, different messaging. You can probably duplicate some e-mails but some things pertinent to B2C are not applicable to B2B and even more so the other way.

In our database I can add tags/categories to my contacts. This way I can send emails to as many different categories of contacts as I can create. I haven't made use of all of them yet, but I'm happy to know it's possible.
